Tow truck insurance
Coverage for towing and recovery operators: rollbacks, wheel-lifts, wreckers and heavy-duty rotators.
What tow truck insurance covers
A tow operator is responsible for two sets of vehicles: your own trucks, and every customer vehicle you hook or store. Motor clubs and police rotation lists set their own minimum limits, and we match the contract.
- Auto liabilityInjuries and property damage you cause while driving.
- On-hook towingCovers a customer's vehicle while it's attached to or loaded on your truck.
- GaragekeepersCovers customer vehicles stored in your lot against theft, fire and vandalism.
- Physical damageCovers your own tow trucks for collision, theft and fire.
- General liabilityCovers claims at your yard or at a recovery scene that aren't auto-related.
- Workers' compensationRequired in California once you have employees.
Trucks we insure
- Rollbacks and flatbeds
- Wheel-lifts and self-loaders
- Light, medium and heavy-duty wreckers
- Rotators
What affects your premium
- Type of work. Private property impounds, police rotation and motor club calls price differently
- Truck size. Heavy-duty recovery carries more exposure than light-duty
- Driving record. Clean MVRs and two or more years of CDL experience get the best pricing
- Safety scores and loss history. CSA scores, inspections and past claims all count
- Where the truck is garaged. Rates vary by ZIP code, even inside California
Common questions
What's the difference between on-hook and garagekeepers?
On-hook covers a customer's vehicle while you're towing it. Garagekeepers covers it once it's parked at your yard. Most tow operators need both.
Do motor clubs require specific coverage?
Yes. Motor clubs and police rotation programs set their own minimum limits. Send us the contract and we'll build the policy to match.
Do I need a USDOT number for a tow truck?
If your truck is over 10,001 lbs GVWR and you cross state lines, generally yes. Our permit team can tell you exactly what applies to you.
