Truck insurance

Semi truck insurance

Coverage for tractor-trailers running under your own authority or leased to a carrier. Dry van, reefer, flatbed, tanker and port drayage.

What semi truck insurance covers

A semi truck policy is a package. Which pieces you need depends on whether you run under your own MC or under a carrier's authority, and what your brokers and lenders require.

  • Primary auto liabilityInjuries and property damage you cause to others. FMCSA minimum is $750,000 for general freight; most brokers want $1,000,000. We file your BMC-91X and MCS-90.
  • Physical damageRepairs or replaces your tractor and trailer after a collision, theft, fire, vandalism or weather. Stated-value options for owner-operators.
  • Motor truck cargoCovers the freight on your trailer. Reefer breakdown coverage is available for temperature-controlled loads.
  • Trailer interchangeCovers non-owned trailers you pull under a written interchange agreement, common in port and rail drayage.
  • Non-trucking liability (bobtail)For leased owner-operators: covers you when you drive off dispatch.
  • Occupational accidentMedical and disability benefits for 1099 drivers who aren't covered by workers' comp.

Operations we insure

  • Dry van and refrigerated (reefer)
  • Flatbed, step deck and lowboy
  • Tanker (non-hazmat and hazmat, by market)
  • Port and intermodal drayage
  • Car haulers
  • Regional and long-haul, interstate and California-only

What affects your premium

  • Driving record. Clean MVRs and two or more years of CDL experience get the best pricing
  • Radius and states. Local and regional work usually costs less than long-haul
  • What you haul. Higher-value or higher-risk freight raises cargo and liability rates
  • Equipment value. Physical damage is priced on what your truck and trailer are worth
  • Safety scores and loss history. CSA scores, inspections and past claims all count
  • Where the truck is garaged. Rates vary by ZIP code, even inside California

Common questions

How much is semi truck insurance?

It depends on your drivers, radius, freight, equipment and history. Two owner-operators in the same city can see very different prices. The fastest way to know is a quote: send us your DOT number and equipment list.

Is cargo insurance required?

Federal rules don't require cargo coverage for general freight, only for household goods movers. In practice most brokers and shippers require $100,000 in cargo before they'll give you a load.

Can I get coverage with a new MC?

Yes. Several of our markets write new ventures. See new authority insurance for what to expect.

Do you insure port drayage?

Yes. We can add trailer interchange and set limits to match the interchange agreements used at California ports.
