Truck insurance
Dump truck insurance
Coverage for sand and gravel, construction, demolition and aggregate haulers, from one truck to a full fleet.
What dump truck insurance covers
Dump trucks work on job sites as much as on the road, so the right policy covers both. Contractors usually ask for proof of auto liability and general liability with them named as additional insured.
- Auto liabilityInjuries and property damage you cause on the road. Required for your MCP and, for interstate for-hire work, your MC.
- Physical damageCovers your truck and trailer for collision, rollover, theft and fire.
- General liabilityCovers job-site claims, like damage to a customer's driveway or property during a dump.
- Workers' compensationRequired in California once you have employees.
- Motor truck cargoUsually optional for aggregate, but needed for higher-value materials.
Trucks we insure
- End dumps and side dumps
- Transfers and super dumps
- Bottom dumps (belly dumps)
- Single-axle and tandem dump trucks
Permits for dump truck operators
Most California dump truck operators run intrastate. That usually means a USDOT number, a CA carrier ID and a Motor Carrier Permit (MCP) with your insurance on file. If you haul for-hire across state lines, you'll also need MC authority. Our permit team handles all of it.
What affects your premium
- Driving record. Clean MVRs and two or more years of CDL experience get the best pricing
- Radius and states. Local and regional work usually costs less than long-haul
- Who you haul for. Steady contractor work and short radius usually price well
- Equipment value. Physical damage is priced on what your truck and trailer are worth
- Safety scores and loss history. CSA scores, inspections and past claims all count
- Where the truck is garaged. Rates vary by ZIP code, even inside California
Common questions
Do I need an MC number for a dump truck?
Only if you haul for-hire across state lines. California-only dump work usually needs a USDOT number, CA carrier ID and MCP instead.
Will contractors need a certificate from me?
Almost always. Most contractors want a certificate showing auto and general liability, often with them named as additional insured. We can usually issue it the same business day.
Do you insure dump truck fleets?
Yes, from a single truck to large fleets. See fleet insurance.
