Truck insurance

Hotshot trucking insurance

Coverage for Class 3 to 5 pickups pulling gooseneck, flatbed and bumper-pull trailers for expedited freight.

What hotshot insurance covers

Hotshot trucks are lighter than semis, but once your truck and trailer combined are rated over 10,001 lbs and you haul for-hire across state lines, you need USDOT and MC numbers and the same $750,000 minimum liability.

  • Primary auto liabilityRequired for your authority. We file your BMC-91X.
  • Physical damageCovers both the pickup and the trailer. Make sure the trailer is listed on the policy.
  • Motor truck cargoCovers loads like machinery, building materials and oilfield equipment.
  • Non-trucking liabilityFor hotshot drivers leased to a carrier.
  • Occupational accidentCovers your own injuries if you don't carry workers' comp.

Why hotshot insurance can be harder to place

Many hotshot drivers are new to trucking, run high mileage and haul higher-value equipment. Some insurance companies avoid that mix. As an independent agency we go to the markets that want hotshot business.

What affects your premium

  • Driving record. Clean MVRs and two or more years of CDL experience get the best pricing
  • Radius and states. Local and regional work usually costs less than long-haul
  • What you haul. Higher-value or higher-risk freight raises cargo and liability rates
  • Equipment value. Physical damage is priced on what your truck and trailer are worth
  • Safety scores and loss history. CSA scores, inspections and past claims all count
  • Where the truck is garaged. Rates vary by ZIP code, even inside California

Common questions

Do I need a CDL for hotshot?

You need a CDL if your combined weight rating is over 26,000 lbs and the trailer is rated over 10,000 lbs. Many hotshot setups are built to stay just under that line.

Do I need an MC number for hotshot?

If you haul other people's freight for pay across state lines, yes, plus a USDOT number.

Is my trailer covered automatically?

No. Your trailer needs to be listed for physical damage, and its value stated.
