Truck insurance
Box truck insurance
Coverage for 16 to 26 foot box trucks and straight trucks hauling freight, last-mile deliveries, furniture and expedited loads.
What box truck insurance covers
- Auto liabilityRequired to haul for-hire. FMCSA minimum is $750,000 over 10,001 lbs GVWR and $300,000 under it. Many brokers want $1,000,000.
- Physical damageCovers your truck for collision, theft and fire. Required by your lender if the truck is financed.
- Motor truck cargoCovers the freight in your box. Most load boards and brokers require it.
- General liabilityCovers damage at a customer's home or dock during a delivery.
- Hired and non-owned autoCovers rented trucks and employees' cars used for business.
Do you need a USDOT and MC number?
If you haul for-hire across state lines, you need operating authority (an MC number) and the liability limits that go with your truck's weight. A USDOT number is required for interstate trucks over 10,001 lbs GVWR. California requires a USDOT number and MCP for many intrastate operations too. We'll sort out exactly what you need.
What affects your premium
- Driving record. Clean MVRs and two or more years of CDL experience get the best pricing
- Radius and states. Local and regional work usually costs less than long-haul
- What you haul. Higher-value or higher-risk freight raises cargo and liability rates
- Equipment value. Physical damage is priced on what your truck and trailer are worth
- Safety scores and loss history. CSA scores, inspections and past claims all count
- Where the truck is garaged. Rates vary by ZIP code, even inside California
Common questions
Do I need a CDL for a box truck?
Not if the truck is 26,000 lbs GVWR or under and you're not hauling placarded hazmat.
Is a 26 foot box truck commercial auto or trucking?
If you haul other people's freight for pay, insurance companies treat it as trucking, with filings and cargo coverage.
Can I insure a box truck under my new LLC?
Yes. We can also help you form the LLC and get your USDOT and MC numbers.
